Dulang Paglaum Dulang Paglaum is a project that aims to feed 2,000 malnourished children, but needs help to feed 42,000 more.
Hope to Feed a Child
Luzette Villareal, the artist whose website this is, has pledged herself to help underpriviliged and starving children in her home district of Jaro, Iloilo City, the Philippines.
The Archdiocese of Jaro has almost 377,000 children aged 0 to 6 years old of which 44,000 (11.7%) are malnourished.
Through an Integrated Nutrition Program (INP) a nutritious food preparation called Vita Meal is available to feed these malnourished children provided 5 peso (10 cents) per meal can be raised through donations toward the cost.
The INP is currently only able to feed just 2,000 of the 44,000 malnourished children through a program of supplemental feeding that aims to provide children one meal per day, 5 times a week for 6 months.
The feeding program is called Dulang Paglaum. Dulang is a word for an earthenware dish which later evolved to mean table where dulangs are placed.
Dulang can also be the contraction of "dula nga" which means "lost" and paglaum means "hope". Thus "dulang paglaum" means lost hope.
There could be no lost hope but, instead, a table of hope if one only helps.
Thus the project named " Dulang Paglaum " was born, symbolizing a " Table of Hope. "
The picture above is a poster created for the project.
This child is not an actor, this is not a staged scene, but a real child eating garbage off the ground.
In her own small way Luzette wants to make a difference by supporting this program to feed a child through donations made on this website.
On a visit on May 13, 2009 she was able to give the project a donation of 25,000 pesos, some of the receipts for which are shown below.
This donation will provide a meal for 2,500 children.
To liberate a child from malnutrition is expected to take six months of supplemental feeding.
The project in Jaro is run by Monsignor Meliton Oso, a Roman Catholic Priest and operates from the Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action Center, or JASAC for short.
The center is based in Jaro Cathedral Compound, Jaro, Iloilo City. Tel: +63 33 320 2425 or 328 4133.
Msgr. Meliton Oso has initiated a number of social programs over the past few years including setting up a drugstore in 2002 to provide low cost generic medicines to the poor which make up 29.6% of families in Iloilo.
Msgr. Meliton Oso who is a personal friend of Luzette's family has also taken a strong stand against corrupt officials in government who siphon off social funds. For more details search for " Meliton Oso " in Google.
The Dulang Paglaum project has committed itself to feeding just 2,000 of the 44,000 malnourished children.
That's because local donations are not expected to be able feed more than 2000 children a day. So there are 42,000 more children that JASAC does not have the funds to feed.
Just $3 will feed a malnourished child for one month
The receipt above for 12,500 Pesos was donated to a 2nd Feed a Child program started in the parish of Tubungan.
Anything you can afford to donate will make a real difference to one, or more, of these children.
Give what you can whether it's $1, $3, $5, $10 or more, it doesn't matter because what ever amount you can give will truly make a difference.
